Hyperbaric oxygen and the aging brain
A three-month randomized trial in healthy adults over 64. Attention and processing speed moved.
What they did
63 healthy adults over 64 were randomized to three months of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (33 people) or no treatment (30 people). The main measure was general cognitive function after the program. Brain blood flow was measured with perfusion MRI.
What they found
Global cognitive function improved in the oxygen group compared with controls. The clearest gains were in attention and information processing speed, with effect sizes around 0.75, which is large for this kind of study. MRI showed increased blood flow in several frontal and parietal regions in the treated group.
The Luxe read
Encouraging, and early. This is one trial of 63 people, the control group received nothing rather than a sham treatment, and the protocol was a clinical one delivered in a hospital chamber over dozens of sessions. It says something interesting about the brain's plasticity later in life. It does not say a soft-shell chamber in a wellness studio does the same thing.
Questions worth asking
- What pressure, how many sessions, and who is supervising? The trial protocol matters.
- Has this been repeated by another group, in a bigger sample, with a sham arm?
- What are the contraindications, and has a clinician screened me for them?
